Line is the direction in which a viewer’s eye travels when they look at a floral design: it gives a sense of movement around, through and out of a design. The designer may want the viewer’s eye to be drawn in and around the design. They may want the viewer’s eye to be drawn in then lead away to a focal point. Flowers on a stage, for example, are not to be the final resting point for the viewer’s eye. Line also evokes an emotional response. Free flowing organic lines made by nature can evoke a sense of freedom, for example, whilst strong vertical lines can evoke a sense of control and order.
