Colour refers to the visual response of the eye, it has the strongest emotional power of all the elements. Combining colours and creating harmony with them can be one of the most pleasurable parts of floristry. Colour is very subjective. Many colour schemes have been created to help designers keep order and control viewer emotions. For example, a complementary colour scheme includes colours that are opposite one another on a colour wheel, making a bold statement and evoking excitement.

Monochromatic colour schemes use only one colour, triadic schemes have three colours evenly distributed on a colour wheel, for example red, yellow and blue. These colour schemes each evoke very different emotional responses. The study of colour explores these schemes and many more.

Over the past 10 years, though, the floristry industry has witnessed a strong movement towards less contrived colour use, providing designers with some welcome freedom to go with whatever colour use makes them feel how they want their viewers to feel. They enjoy the process, and you can too.
