Have you ever looked in a florist’s window and thought, I wish I could do that? Or perhaps you’ve tried your hand at creating a bouquet yourself and wondered why it doesn’t look quite right?

While it may seem pretty straightforward to stick a few flowers in a vase, there’s actually a thought process and a bit of design knowledge that goes into creating a really beautiful bouquet. It’s why florist-made bouquets always look so effortlessly good!

Luckily, basic floristry skills are not hard to pick up, and there’s a load of reasons why floristry is such a good hobby to have.

  1. 1. It’s easy to get started, even with no previous experience

While other hobbies like playing an instrument or gardening require you to understand a bit about them before jumping in, you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of flowers or floristry at all to get started with flower arranging. While we do recommend investing in a good pair of snips and gloves, you don’t need specific tools to start arranging––just your hands. If you’re interested in learning the basic skills, there are plenty of books and online resources available to help you out.

  1. 2. You’ll learn a new, unique skill

Being able to arrange a beautiful bouquet is not something everyone can do. While others might play a sport, bake or read as a hobby, having floristry skills––even basic ones––under your belt is quite the brag! You will know not just how to arrange flowers in pretty ways, but you’ll continue to find new techniques and methods of doing so. It’s a constantly evolving skill that will constantly have you discovering new things. What a cool skill to have, huh?

  1. 3. It’s super relaxing and can help you meditate

Hobby flower arranging is such a relaxing way to unwind and create something beautiful at the same time. You’re focused on one task, and much like painting, you’re placing elements together in a way that feels good, really listening to your intuition. It’s this single-minded focus that makes flower arranging an effective method of meditation as well. When our bodies are stressed, the nervous system goes into a sympathetic state––also known as flight or fight. When our bodies are at rest, the nervous system is experiencing a parasympathetic, calm response, which can be created by flower arranging.

  1. 4. You can give your arrangements as gifts

Gone will be the days of trying to figure out a gift for every loved one’s birthday or celebration! When you know how to create a gorgeous bouquet or a gift bag arrangement, you can easily whip up a stunning, one-of-a-kind gift. In fact, giving flowers that you’ve arranged yourself is more thoughtful than anything you could buy at the store, considering the time and effort you put into creating it. Giving your arrangements as gifts also means you can be buying flowers and practising your skills without worrying about flowers going to waste.

To wrap it up, floristry is not only a really useful tool to have up your sleeve, it’s also a very fun, relaxing hobby for anyone who’s interested. What’s not to love? Beautiful bouquets, easy gift options, a niche skill that’ll certainly impress and a new way to explore meditation and mindfulness. Sounds like the best hobby of all to us!
