Space is divided into three parts.

The first part of the space element that florists need to consider is the positive space or area for which the design is to be made. Designers need to take note of the available space and create arrangements that fit accordingly. A small arrangement, for example, has little impact in a large hall or meeting room.

Positive space within an arrangement is space occupied by individual flowers. This is the second part of the overall space element. It is important to occupy space within the design to enable the principles of scale and rhythm, in particular, to be incorporated into the design. For more information about scale and rhythm, please see the information about the principles of design.

Negative space is space void of a design or left empty around individual flower and plant material: it is space without contents. This third part of the space element is a wonderful way to create focal areas which are areas of dominance. For more information about dominance, please see the information about the principles of design.

NOW what about Size?  Does size really matter? … You bet it does.  Size, I believe should be the sixth element of design as it’s importance is HUGE as it relates largely to the principles of design Balance, Scale and Proportion.  But as it is not a stand alone element in floral design it should be thought about when looking at the elements Shape/FORM and SPACE.
